How to find your purpose in life
How can we find our purpose in life? How can we tell if we are truly connected to our values? How can we build a life that feels as meaningful as possible to us? How can online therapy help us discover our existential purpose?
Finding our life purpose begins with identifying goals and values, which add essential pieces to the puzzle of our existence—direction, motivation, and meaning.
Often, when asked to describe their deepest values, many people pause, hesitate, or even feel sadness. This is because most of us are not used to listening to ourselves sincerely or taking the time to reflect on what truly makes us happy and fulfilled, what would allow us to live fully in alignment with our deepest selves.
Losing touch with ourselves may seem like a way to save time, energy, or resources. But in reality, modern life’s frantic pace often leaves no room for mental well-being—until something inside us eventually breaks.
Humans are not robots. At our core, we all seek direction and meaning. Without it, we risk falling into dissatisfaction, boredom, stress, sadness, and emptiness.
The importance of values
Even in the midst of chaos or dissatisfaction, reconnecting with our values can open a new path. Unlike goals, which disappear once achieved, values endure: living by them brings motivation, fulfillment, and vitality.
When we do something because it truly resonates with us, it feels different than doing it out of guilt or external pressure. For example, pursuing a field of study that aligns with a passion will provide motivation even when challenges arise. Conversely, following a path chosen for us—whether in school, work, or relationships—inevitably weakens our drive, especially when it doesn’t reflect our own values but those imposed by others.
To find your life purpose, it’s essential to return to your inner self, reconnect with the dormant part of your soul, give it a voice, and identify your true values. Therapy—online or in person—can help in this process. From an infinite list (love, friendship, altruism, open-mindedness, belonging, generosity, wisdom, humor, health, integrity, adventure…), you might choose five that you truly feel are yours. Those values can fuel your life, transforming “I must” into “I want.”
An exercise to discover your life purpose
Take a pen and paper and give yourself the time to answer these questions sincerely:
- When was the last time you felt completely absorbed in what you were doing—so much so that you lost track of time? What were you doing, where were you, and with whom?
- When you think of Love—deep, authentic connection—what comes to mind? People, activities, animals, places? This can reveal your values.
- What are you truly willing to work hard for, even when life gets difficult? Look back at times when you gave your all not out of obligation, but out of genuine passion.
- Imagine a day with no obligations, no worries, no responsibilities. You are rested, calm, and full of energy. How would you spend it? Which activities would make you genuinely happy?
These reflections provide useful insight into who you are, what drives you, and what matters most.
