Illness as a Spiritual Awakening

Illness as a Spiritual Awakening

What are the soul and spiritual aspects of illness? How can we achieve healing by following the soul’s project? What can online therapy do to bring awareness into your life?

Even today, the most subtle, soul, and spiritual aspect of illness still seems to be an area largely unusual, new, little explored and developed, for humanity and for psychosomatic medicine itself. This is because the world and everything around us is mainly analyzed and studied through the five senses, that is, the physical and tangible ones.

When faced with an illness, beyond the more earthly and physical part, as Ouspensky says in his book “The Fourth Way”, it is useful to investigate the disorder also in terms of awareness. Are we truly aware of what we are going through? Of what we have had to endure or are about to face within ourselves? The first step toward healing, and to try in every way to get out of illness, is to become aware, to awaken from the torpor of unawareness, to fight to emerge from the fog and darkness.

It is therefore necessary to begin a deep journey of self-analysis and self-awareness of what we really are, of our past, our needs, of the necessity to make even drastic changes to our existence, in order to get out of that fog and first of all to take back ourselves, to face and embrace what the illness has come to tell us.

Illnesses can often be physical, other times psychic (anxiety, phobias, depression, panic, neurosis), and at times manifest in both areas of disturbance (let’s remember that often what happens in the mind is also reflected in the body in terms of health).

Pathology, therefore, of body or mind, can be faced as something broader and more significant, a turning point, a great opportunity for awakening, to look reality, ourselves, our life, our true essence as human beings in the face. To choose, in the grip of the greatest darkness, to turn toward the light. By investigating, analyzing, laying ourselves bare, we could deeply understand the problem, the message that illness carries, channeling all necessary energies toward a decisive revolution of consciousness.

Many of the sufferings we perceive and face in this life can derive from states in which our unconsciousness usually lingers: envy, selfishness, negativity, wrong behaviors, illusions, greed, malice… All this darkness leads to just as many negative manifestations such as fear, anguish, dissatisfaction, anxiety, depression. In one great word: unhappiness.

It is important to try not to live separated, divided, from this great self-awareness that instead wants us to be conscious, present, just human beings, beings with a great evolutionary task to accomplish in this life. Our true being is actually made of joy, lightheartedness, harmony, and awareness. Often there is great resistance to undertaking this direction. A personality that has considerable difficulty accepting growth, maturation, the inherent change of the human being, can find refuge and let itself be enveloped in the fog, and thus in illness.

The categories of illness in a spiritual sense

At a broader and more subtle level of consciousness, it is thought that there are four categories of illness:

  • Psychological illnesses (due to current conditions and situations)
  • Individual karmic illnesses
  • Collective illnesses
  • Evolutionary illnesses (capable of transforming the person’s energy and leading it toward a more evolved form of awareness)

It is good to consider that suffering is inevitable when approaching this type of situation, but it can also become a great teacher and a great ally. When faced with a great evolution to be accomplished, and thus the transformation of one’s status quo of consciousness to a higher and more aware level, inevitably there are frictions between the material plane, which pushes downward, and the spiritual plane, which, on the contrary, pushes to follow that divine light, “the project of the soul,” that inner spark that we all possess.

Trapped between two opposing tendencies, the person will tend to fall ill on the physical or psychic level. If one cannot become aware of this inner struggle, of the push that our consciousness is trying to enact in the right direction for us, to process it, to master it, there is also the possibility of remaining prey to crises, disorders, depression, sense of uselessness, emptiness, anguish, with the resulting psychosomatic disorders connected to them. Such illnesses can last for years, sometimes until death, if there has not been a true awareness of the situation, of what is happening inside us at a subtle level.

Being well with oneself

Healing often comes through an awakening, through a total change of habits, relationships, ways of acting and thinking. It starts with a new awareness of what reality truly is. It is certain that true spiritual self-realization can only be conceived if the individual has embraced the ability to be well with themselves. Loving and accepting oneself is the first step to take to begin a journey of healing and rebirth. Following this will come self-sufficiency, independence, inner realization. Only starting from ourselves, filling with light all those voids we carry inside, patching up what needs care on multiple levels, can we then complete and expand our path, also opening ourselves to others and to the world in its entirety. Starting from ourselves, acting with Love and awareness, is the highest state of consciousness; loving not to receive, but simply to fulfill that divine spark of evolution, care, healing, inherent in the human being.

What can online therapy do?

Through online therapy it is possible to investigate one’s condition of suffering on a more subtle and spiritual level. To face physical or psychic disorder on multiple planes, bringing our awareness to an important search for ourselves, of who we are, how we have acted in the past and present, of what the most authentic part of ourselves is really trying to tell us through symptoms of suffering and discomfort, in order to evolve and follow the light of our soul’s project.
